The St. James' House at 1300 Charles Street was built in 1768 by attorney James Mercer, and is one of the few eighteenth-century frame houses still standing in Fredericksburg. Every year it opens to the public during Garden Week. This year it is open April 19-24, 1-4pm. each day.
The house, which was built on land once owned by George Washington, is described as a "gentleman's cottage" and is particularly noted for its collection of eighteenth-century furniture, porcelain and artwork.
