The Montpelier Wine Festival
May 1-2
The Montpelier Wine Festival, on the grounds of historic James Madison's Montpelier, is a delightful festival and one not to miss! Last year my husband, Joe, and I bought our tickets in advance and drove the short thirty-minute-drive with friends to Montpelier. You not only get to spend a pastoral afternoon in the Virginia countryside, sipping wonderful wine under giant shade trees, but there is much more! It is a smaller wine festival than most, with more families and continuous musical entertainment, lots of kite flying in the spring breezes with grassy hills cordoned off for the kite flyers. Of course you can buy kites there, and you can also shop in the artisan booths you have come to expect at local wine festivals.
There are many top Virginia wineries there with wine tastings and welcoming talks about how the wines are made and their latest winners. We enjoyed the short walk to Montpelier, the historical mansion, and loved the self guided tour through the gilded halls and stately rooms. Once back outside we headed to the Civil War living history camp underway nearby, with eight or so Confederate soldier reenactors giving historical insight into battles in the area. There were tents and several family activities there. My favorite was watching the oxen pull wooden sleds and the children riding having a ball. I also liked watching many families take the hot air balloon rides on a brightly colored, tethered balloon. We all left with our newly purchased wine, our two complimentary wine glasses, and the promise to come again this year!
